At the heart of everything we do at Birmingham Restaurant Week (BRW) is giving back to the local community. Over the past 14 years, we have donated over $100,000 to local food-based nonprofits and community organizations. After a successful BRW 2023 – Winter Edition, we are honored to donate $2,500 to Magic City Harvest for their efforts to eliminate food insecurity in Birmingham!

Have you ever hosted a gathering where you over ordered food and had an unimaginable amount of leftovers? The majority of the time, the uneaten perishables will go to waste. Instead of throwing the remaining food out, Magic City Harvest will work with the caterers to take the leftovers and give it to those in need of a warm meal in the community. Working directly with grocery stores, wholesale food suppliers, restaurants, caterers, churches and schools, Magic City Harvest rescues food that would’ve previously gone to waste and distributes it to those in need at local missions and social services organizations, shelters and churches – all working to help eradicate food waste and hunger in Birmingham.

“We appreciate Birmingham Restaurant Week and everything they do to support those in need in the community,” says Magic City Harvest Executive Director Suzanne Wright. “With this donation, we will be able to provide approximately 5,320 meals through our community partners on the front line feeding our hungry neighbors. Thank you for supporting our mission of ending waste and ending hunger in Birmingham!”

Our contribution will enable Magic City Harvest to keep providing nutritious food to hundreds of families experiencing food hardship each month. Food insecurities know no limits and affect people of all ages, races and religions. By supporting groups like Magic City Harvest, we aim to raise awareness for the need in the community and help provide the warmth and joy that food can provide.

“Birmingham Restaurant Week is all about spotlighting the amazing culinary community we have in this city, but giving back has always been the backbone of our efforts,” says BRW founder Bill Stoeffhaas. “We don’t always realize just how many people go hungry in this city, and Magic City Harvest’s efforts go a long way in meeting the basic need of food for those struggling. We are proud to help them help others in need in our community with this donation.”

This contribution would not have been possible without our BRW sponsors, participating restaurants and our community as they support our efforts each year! We are extremely grateful for the help and look forward to giving back for many years to come.

Save the date for BRW 2023 – Summer Edition, set to take place July 20-29, 2023! We look forward to continuing our efforts to promote Birmingham’s premier culinary scene and making another donation to a food-based organization.
